Cycling at night has its hazards

By Molly Oliver

Travelling at night is sometimes unavoidable and although many of us like to travel during the day, when the winter nights start to draw in around the UK being out in the dark is something that those of us who work 9-5 just can't avoid! Cycling home at night can be significantly more dangerous as you don't have the level of awareness that you would commonly come to associate with cycling during the day and accordingly you may need to look at extra precautions throughout your trip.

If you are going to undertake some cycling at night then it's important that you have the appropriate safety gear while you carry out this task and this helps not only to ensure your own safety but also the safety of other road users who might come into contact with you at this time. The first element of this safety plan that you can undertake is by ensuring that you are wearing appropriate cycling gear and this includes coloured equipment which can be seen easily in the dark.

Wearing a fluorescent jacket and various other highly visible items of clothing can make you easily identifiable by street lights and the headlights of passing cars, allowing them to see easily where you are. You can also place illuminated stickers onto your bicycle and bicycle helmet to allow them to identify you even easier.

Allowing you to see the road ahead quite easily you may consider attaching a light to the front, back or side of your bicycle depending on what you need and this can also help you to check out the road in front of you for any potential hazards that might be coming up.

Being the victim of a road accident is never easy and if you do feel that you have taken all the appropriate precautions and still been left with injuries then you might look towards making a claim for compensation.
