The Shape of Jewellery

By Dave G Thompson

If you are thinking of buying jewellery online, then you should most definitely be made aware of the different available stone cuts and shapes on the market. Most websites have options, but they do lack the personal touch. You will more than likely find yourself stuck, trying to choose the perfect diamond or stone, whereas purchasing at the store would give you access to advisors who know the industry and the products inside and out. In sacrificing that knowledge however, you can find some decent discounts. It might sound like a nasty trade off, but you can actually learn quite a bit online. For example, if you continue to read this article, you will become aware of many different cuts.

Round Brilliant -- Within the American market, this is actually the most common cut. The general idea of the round brilliant is to create the most efficient use of facets and to make the most use out of daylight. This makes the round brilliant one of the most loved gem cuts.

Oval Cut -- This is an elliptical and will usually have a 2:1 width. While this cut is completely different, it is still as bright as the round brilliant.

Baguette Cut -- This phrase is used in reference to the Italian word bacchetta. This cut features 20 facets and is oblong in shape. Many of these are step cut, meaning the facets are literally carved in the shape of steps. The edges ascend in the manner of a pyramid, and the top is flattened.

Square Cut -- The sides of the square cut are the same length, as you will find when shopping for jewellry online. These can come in a number of different sizes, and as with the baguette cut, the facets are cut in steps.

Trilliant Cut -- In most diamonds of this nature, the number of facets are exactly 43, and the trilliant cut is made in a triangular shape. With truncated corners, this gem provides a fiery aesthetic. The cuts come up with an equilateral form, and they provide incredible colours and light. The trilliant cut works quite nicely with light colour gems. These include diamonds, aquamarines, white sapphires, and a few others.

Pear Cut -- With a pear cut gemstone there will be a total of 71 facets. As a combination of the oval and the marquise, this gem forms a teardrop.

Octagon Cut -- Though this cut is similar to the emerald cut, though the steps on the pavilion are not of equal distance. Colours are quite dramatic with this cut.

Emerald Cut -- The emerald cut is without a doubt one of the most popular on the market, and unlike the previous, it does have equidistant steps. This cut was developed specifically for emeralds in order to reduce the amount of pressure on the gem.

There are many different cuts, and choosing the right one will depend on your personal preferences rather than what is popular at the time. Start searching and buy the gem that speaks to you.
